Ithaque and Ava Gallery present Becoming, a solo exhibition by Iranian artist Atoosa Alebouyeh, bringing together two major photographic series: Me in My Point of View (2016) and The Unstable Face (2020).

Through these two bodies of work, Atoosa Alebouyeh explores the construction of identity and the intimate experience of a body in transformation. The exhibition traces a journey in which self-portraiture becomes a tool for self-exploration, revealing tensions between perception, vulnerability, and the representation of a physical and psychological state.

Me in my point of View (2016)

The Me in My Point of View series offers an exploration of the artist’s inner world. Through self-portraits conceived as mental spaces, Atoosa Alebouyeh examines the invisible boundaries that each of us constructs around ourselves. She evokes the intimate circle we shape to protect ourselves, but which can also become a space of confinement. Between chosen solitude and silent contemplation, the images convey the complexity of our relationship with ourselves and with our own boundaries.

The Unstable Face (2020)

Four years after Me in My Point of View, the artist adopts a more direct approach with The Unstable Face. Over several years, she photographed the temporary transformations of her face caused by a physiological condition related to her menstrual cycle. Rather than concealing this recurring metamorphosis, she uses analog photography to confront prevailing norms of representation surrounding the female body and beauty. Far from seeking perfection, these self-portraits reveal a fragile and deeply human truth. The face becomes a shifting territory where uncertainty, transformation, and self-acceptance emerge.

United under the title Becoming, these two series trace the contours of an ever-evolving identity. They bear witness to a process of becoming rather than a fixed state, in which the body and the image emerge as spaces of negotiation between who we are, how we perceive ourselves, and what we reveal to the world.

She holds a degree in Photography from Azad University (Art & Architecture) and has developed a practice centered on staged photography for more than a decade. Her work is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic in which the human body occupies a central place, within pared-down compositions that emphasize silence, space, and introspection.

This exhibition is a collaboration between Ithaque and Ava Gallery.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Ava Gallery, founded by Ava Ayoubi, who is also the founder of Galerie Bavan in Tehran. Based in the United Arab Emirates, Ava Gallery fosters dialogue between regional and international art scenes, supporting artists whose practices engage with contemporary cultural and social issues. Its commitment to emerging talent actively contributes to the visibility of new voices in contemporary art.

Ithaque is a residency space and art gallery founded by Alexandre Arminjon in 2020, with a mission to preserve the know-how and practices associated with analog photography. Located in the heart of the Marais, this hybrid space consists of two distinct areas. The first hosts photographic exhibitions. With a commitment to the diversity of artistic practices and cultures, its program aims to showcase photography in all its forms. The second houses two black-and-white analog printing laboratories.

Since 2022, Ithaque has offered analog photography workshops for young audiences across the Île-de-France region. As part of the bicentenary of photography, Ithaque was awarded the French Ministry of Culture’s official label for its educational photography workshop activities. At the same time, the association Les Amis d’Ithaque, which supports the organization of workshops and artist residencies, was recognized as a public-interest organization by the French tax authorities.
